Lake Ontario serves to moderate Toronto's weather to the point that its climate is one of the mildest in Canada. The city is well known for its hot and humid air masses throughout the summer, with some spectacular thunderstorms occurring around the lake. Midsummer temperatures range 61-81 F/16-27 C, with quite a few days in the 90s F/32-35 C. Weather is most comfortable in late spring or early autumn. Winters are not as cold as in may other Canadian cities. Partly this is because it is quite far south, although winters can be snowy and cold, with January being the coldest month, hovers just slightly below freezing and a snowfall of more than 10 cm (four inches) is unusual.
